Twitter is a great way to keep up with goings on at conferences. I noticed that there's a Macworld account and I've created one to demonstrate microblogging for my education workshop participants. My personal Twitter account is here, too. Anyone else into this handy tool? Any recommendations of people to follow in the tech world?
Several of us are experimenting with Twitter in education throughout NYS. We began goofing around with it after meeting each other at a NYSCATE conference and have been working with it in different ways ever since.
Twitter is not very useful unless you build a network to follow. As someone recently twitted ( I think Robert Scoble), the power is not in being "followed" but in who you are following. It's another way of accessing info that you wouldn't be able to do so via traditional means. In my ed tech world, my network people are always posting links to relevant articles, blog postings, new software, etc. We also often ask for help when developing resources for workshops etc. and often get IMMEDIATE responses when we need it. It's also common for people to ask a question and do an informal poll on a topic. I personally also find following formal sources of info like Techmeme and Mashable to be helpful and to keep me current.
The best way to get started is just to try it out and follow people like crazy until you develop a network. It's a two way street, too, so think of a way you can contribute as many people don't like to follow others who don't update on a regular basis.
I was in Vegas a few weeks ago watching the Vegas Marathon. I was at the starting line watching all the action leading up to the start. During that time I was posted tweets to twitter and pictures to flickr using my Blackberry. Meanwhile, friends and family back on the East coast were getting all those details in (near) real time, all from my perspective. A few of them even enhanced it by catching live video feeds of the event through some Internet service.
Ok, not your typical use, but for an hour or so at the start and then throughout the morning, I was better than any broadcast of the event because of my vested interest in what was happening on behalf of the family and friends of the member of our family who was running.
I won't be at the conference, but I'm willing to help you with demos from this end. If you need participants while you're doing demos, I'm willing to help.
